Abstract

Explores the Search / Retrieve via URL (SRU) protocol, tracing its roots in Z39.50, a previous information retrieval protocol, to its use in present day applications. Provides a high-level overview of the three SRU operations: searchRetrieve, scan, and explain. Touches briefly on some related standards such as CQL, Z39.91, and Z39.92. Reports on the creation of a test system using a Linux distribution in a virtual machine with the YAZ proxy software from Index Data. Provides a description and example configuration for the YAZ proxy software. Includes data and links to program files which may be used to recreate and experiment with the test server.
