Due to the large population of immigrants Canada lays claim to one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the world. A chief characteristic of having such a population is that Canada's populace is constantly interacting on a global scale. Such global communication, hinges on information sharing that is necessarily multicultural and multilingual. This presents a challenge to libraries when attempting to meet the information needs of this diverse population, as they reach out to other parts of the world.

This study explores the need for an increase in Chinese materials in Canada, the mode of acquisition to attain Chinese materials, and the publishing industry in China. Following English and French, Chinese is the third-most-spoken language in Canada (Lo 2003). Thus, the attainment of materials in other languages is essential in providing this multicultural nation with appropriate and comprehensive services. Beyond my discussion of multicultural services to Chinese immigrants, I also provide a foundation for further studies into multilingual collections for different types of libraries.

My study prompted me to investigate the multilingual collection in science and engineering libraries. To further my understanding of multicultural services in libraries I am developing a community study concerning engineering students who speak English as their second language. As part of my future career, I intend to continue studying services for multilingual users in Canada.

I would like to take the opportunity provided by LIS 600 Capping Exercise to thank the faculty and staff at the School of Library Information Studies, University of Alberta for designing and organizing such a comprehensive and beneficial program.

In completing my MLIS, I not only gained a sound, theoretical understanding of relevant information science concepts, but I additionally acquired valuable hands-on experience. The range of knowledge and experience gained from completing a graduate degree in Information Science is quite broad: from Information Technology (IT) to reference services, and from collection development to instruction. I am confident that, upon completing this program, I will be thoroughly prepared for a challenging and exciting career as information professional.
